Aluminium Doors

Aluminium doors create strong, slim and highly configurable entrances for modern homes and extensions. We specify the door style, threshold, colour, glazing and locking around the opening so the result feels secure, refined and practical.

Inside every Sheerline frame

Sheerline Thermlock

Most aluminium systems break the cold bridge with a polyamide strip. Sheerline designed their own multi-chamber core instead and put it at close to double the insulation. It is built into every Sheerline product we fit.

Where it fits

The door that matches the windows.

An aluminium front or back door is usually chosen because something else on the house is already aluminium. It comes off the same Sheerline frames and the same powder coating as our aluminium windows and sliders, so a door sitting in a run of them reads as one set rather than as two separate decisions made a year apart.

The frame is thin for the strength it holds, which is what lets a door carry a tall glazed panel, or sit between windows without the surround thickening up to cope. French doors with a flush aluminium window either side, all in one black, reads as a single opening rather than as three products that happen to be near each other.

  • Twelve standard powder-coated colours, and any RAL beyond them
  • A single leaf or French doors, with side screens and toplights where the opening allows
  • Blinds can be sealed inside the glass, as they are here

Hardware

The hinge you cannot see.

Hinges are the one part of a door nobody chooses and everybody looks at. Three knuckles standing off the frame break the line of the door every time you walk up to it, and on a flat aluminium leaf there is nothing else going on to distract from them.

The InvisiHinge sits inside the edge instead, so with the door shut there is nothing on the face of it at all. The restrictor that stops the door swinging into a wall is built into the hinge rather than bolted across the frame as a separate arm, so that disappears with it. It stays adjustable after the door is hung, which is what lets us bring a door back into line later without taking anything off the face.

  • Concealed in the edge, so nothing shows on a closed door
  • The restrictor is part of the hinge, not a separate arm
  • Adjustable after hanging, so the door can be trued up later

Handle finishes

Thermlock

Where the cold stops.

Aluminium conducts heat, and that is the one honest argument against it. What decides whether an aluminium door is warm is the break running up the middle of the frame, the part that stops the outside face passing the cold straight through to the inside one.

Most systems bridge that gap with a polyamide strip. Sheerline designed a multi-chamber core instead, and it goes into every Sheerline frame we fit rather than sitting on an upgrade list. The cutaway is what the figures at the top of this page are measuring: blue is the weather, orange is your hallway, and the band between them is the part doing the work.

  • A multi-chamber core in place of a polyamide strip
  • The same core as our aluminium windows and sliders

Security

Held at several points, not just at the lock.

An aluminium leaf is a stiff leaf. It does not flex under pressure, which gives the locking something solid to pull against, and it is the specification around that which is worth talking about.

Multi-point locking as standard
One turn of the key throws bolts at several points down the leaf, so the door is held into its seals along its full height rather than at the lock alone. That is standard on every door we hang, not an upgrade you have to ask for.
Glass that stays in one piece
Laminated glass carries a bonded interlayer, so it holds together instead of breaking through. It is the first thing we would suggest for a glazed side screen at ground level, or any panel within reach of the handle.
Available to PAS 24
The standard applies to the doorset as a whole, the leaf, the frame, the glass and the locking tested together, so it is specified from the start rather than added afterwards. Tell us at survey if your build has to meet it.

A low threshold

The threshold

The step you stop noticing.

The threshold is the part of a door you meet every day, usually carrying something. A low one takes the step down to a lip you can push a pushchair or a wheelchair over, and it is the detail that decides whether a back door gets used properly or gets avoided.

It is not automatic, and we would rather say so before survey than after. A low threshold has less height in which to throw water back out, so on an exposed elevation, a door with nothing above it, or a path that falls back towards the house, the weathered detail is the right answer. We look at the levels, the drainage and how the door is actually used before choosing one.

  • Low threshold where the exposure and the drainage allow it
  • Weathered detail for exposed and unsheltered openings
  • Settled at survey against levels, drainage and access

Colour

Twelve standard colours, powder coated in the UK.

Powder coating is baked onto the aluminium rather than painted over it, so it does not flake and it never needs redoing. Anthracite Grey and Jet Black are the two we fit most often, and both sit well against brick and render alike.

You can have a different colour inside and out, and beyond these we can match any RAL colour, confirmed against a sample before your door is ordered. If you have a shade in mind, ask and we will tell you what is possible. Compare colours across every material

Door handles

Eight handle finishes on a long backplate.

The backplate carries the lever and the cylinder aperture together, so the lock and the handle are settled as one decision rather than two. The finish you pick runs through the letterplate, hinges and threshold as well.

  • Long-plate door handle in Black Black
  • Long-plate door handle in White White
  • Long-plate door handle in Antique Black Antique Black
  • Long-plate door handle in Anthracite Anthracite
  • Long-plate door handle in Satin Silver Satin Silver
  • Long-plate door handle in Brushed Steel Brushed Steel
  • Long-plate door handle in Chrome Chrome
  • Long-plate door handle in Gold Gold

Which handles a door can take depends on the slab, the lock set and the colour package, so we confirm the exact hardware at specification stage. See the full handle specification

Product questions

FAQs about Aluminium Doors

Is an aluminium front door cold?

Aluminium conducts heat, so the thermal break in the middle of the frame is what decides the answer. Sheerline use a multi-chamber core there rather than a polyamide strip, and the doors we fit reach 1.4 W/m²K double glazed and 1.0 triple. A modern aluminium door is not the cold aluminium of the 1980s, which is where the reputation comes from.

Will the door match my aluminium windows?

Yes, and it is the usual reason people choose one. The door comes off the same Sheerline frames and the same powder-coated colour range as our aluminium windows, bifolds and sliders, so it can be ordered to the same finish rather than matched by eye afterwards.

What colours can I have?

Twelve standard powder-coated colours, and any RAL colour beyond them. The inside and the outside can be specified separately if you want a dark face to the street and something lighter in the hall.

Can I have glass in an aluminium door?

Yes. Glazed panels in the door, side screens beside it and a toplight above it are all configurations of the same system, and obscured glass keeps the daylight without the view in. Which ones your opening will take is settled at survey.

What maintenance does an aluminium door need?

Washing the frames down two or three times a year is genuinely it. Powder coating does not need painting and will not rot or warp, and the moving parts are the hinges and the lock, both of which we can adjust or replace without touching the door itself.

Order process

A clear process from first quote to aftercare.

Four steps. The first one has two ways in: price it yourself online, or have us come out. After that it runs the same either way.

01

Your price

Price it yourself on the online tool, or book a free consultation and we build the same quote with you. Both run on the same price list, so the figure matches.

02

Technical survey

Once you go ahead we survey before anything is made. Not a second sales visit: the measurements, thresholds and fixings the factory needs to build it right.

03

Installation

Fitted by our own installers rather than subcontractors, trained on the systems we sell and working carefully in a house someone lives in. We clear up after ourselves before we leave.

04

Aftercare

A ten year insurance-backed guarantee through the CPA on new windows and doors, and your FENSA certificate sent direct. Anything afterwards, you ring us, not a call centre.

Instant quote
