Composite front door and sidelight, Milton Keynes
The widest door leaf we do, and a sidelight glazed the full height of the opening. Both decisions were about the same thing: getting daylight down the hallway.
Installed
The door that came out was white uPVC: four panels under a sunburst arch, a brass letterplate, a brass lever, and a narrow side panel that was glazed at the top and boarded across the bottom half. It had done its years. What went in is a composite door on the Distinction Rustic Renown shape, tongue and groove boards framed by a plain border, with a diamond light set into the upper half of the slab.
Beside it is a sidelight glazed from head to threshold rather than half of one. That, and the widest leaf we do, are the two things the customer asked for, and both were for the same reason: this is a narrow hallway with a corridor running off the back of it, and the old side panel was giving up its lower half to a solid board. The new one does not, so the daylight reaches the floor.
The slab is 44.5mm and insulated, where a typical uPVC door panel is 28mm. It is a compression moulded glass reinforced polyester skin over a foam filled core, with water resistant polymer edges and engineered wood stiles behind it, so it cannot drink rainwater and bow the way a solid timber core can. On Distinction's independent testing at the University of Salford's Energy House it came out 50% more thermally efficient than a solid timber core door.
Every Distinction door we hang carries AI Secure locking, an APECS 3-star cylinder and an ILH Duplex multipoint lock, and the slabs are accredited by Secured by Design, the police backed standard. Behind that sits a £5,000 security guarantee, terms applying, and we go through them before you order rather than after.
The colour is anthracite grey outside and white inside, which is why it reads as two different doors depending on which side of it you are standing. Outside it is dark against yellow brick, with a black lever, a black letterplate and black hinges. Inside it is white, because a dark slab in a hallway this narrow would take back the light the sidelight was widened to let in.

The door I designed with Fenster. Design, order and fit was a smooth process and only a few weeks from start to finish!

The inside of the door, keeping it nice and bright inside the hallway.

Old door and framework being removed.

Big hole in the front of my house!

New sill going in. The front doorstep and porch will be going, but only when I've saved up some money!

New door going in. Great fit!

I went for the widest door they did, and a full height side panel to maximise light coming into the hallway and down the corridor.

Anthracite grey on the outside. Looks smart!

Loving the look of it!

Picking up the keys to my big renovation project house right before being abroad for a month was not great timing. But Fenster did a cracking job today and I can't wait to get home to see it in the flesh. So smart! Thank you mum xxx
