Flush casement windows and a composite door, Little Horwood
We did the front of this Little Horwood cottage in one colour. Agate grey flush casement windows across both floors, and a composite front door in the porch finished to match them.
Installed
The house is a rendered cottage on a village lane, with red brick heads over the openings and a small tiled porch on the front. We fitted flush casement windows across that elevation on the Liniar 70mm flush sash system, where the sash closes level with the outer frame instead of standing proud of it. On a building of this age the flat face is most of the point. It is how timber windows were made, and it is what stops a replacement window announcing itself from the lane.
The system is A+ rated and reaches 1.2 W/m²K with a 28mm double glazed unit, and Liniar publish 35 dB of sound reduction for it. The main windows open on side hinges, and there are trickle vents in the heads, so a room can be aired without a window standing open on a village road.
The front door is a composite door in the same colour, set back in the brick porch with a full height glazed sidelight on each side. The slab itself is boarded rather than glazed, with a long bar handle and a letterplate, so the daylight comes through the sidelights and the door stays solid. We fit Distinction doors, whose slabs are accredited by Secured by Design, and every composite door we fit carries a £5,000 security guarantee.
The colour is agate grey, RAL 7038, which is a soft green grey rather than a cold one. Against cream render and red brick it settles instead of cutting across them, which is what a dark anthracite would have done here. The windows carry it as a Liniar foil and the door is finished to match, so the front reads as one decision rather than two orders placed in the same month.
The plantation shutters behind the glass are the owners' own and were already there. We did the windows and the door.
