Flush casement windows and a composite door, Wolverton

We replaced every window and both doors on this 1930s Wolverton semi, in black brown against a white elevation, while the owners restyled the rest of the house around them.

The house came to us with white frames and a pink bow motif worked into the leaded glass, in the front door and in the bay alongside it. It is a period detail that dates a house very precisely, and it was the thing the owners most wanted gone. The rest of the frontage was cream render and white uPVC that had done its years.

We fitted flush casement windows throughout, on the Liniar 70mm flush sash system, where the sash closes level with the outer frame instead of standing proud of it. That flat face is what makes uPVC read like painted joinery from the pavement, and it matters more than usual on a 1930s bay: the curve of a bay shows up a stepped sash from right across the road. They are A+ rated and reach 1.2 W/m²K with a 28mm double glazed unit.

The finish is black brown, RAL 8022, on every external face front and back. Inside, the house is split by floor: black with black handles downstairs, white upstairs to keep the bedrooms bright. Each face is specified on its own, so the inside does not have to follow the outside, or match itself from floor to floor.

The front door is a composite door in the same black brown, with a long glazed sidelight to keep light in the hall now the leaded panel has gone, and a uPVC door serves the back between two flush casements. The chequerboard tiling at the threshold is the original and was kept.

Worth saying plainly, because the after photographs show it: the render was painted, the drive block paved and the garden landscaped as part of the same restyle, and none of that was our work. We did the windows and the doors. The colour was chosen knowing the walls were going white, which is the part of the job that needed us and the owners to agree early rather than in sequence.
