Residential • Winslow, Buckinghamshire
Secondary glazing, Winslow
The house is listed, so the original windows were always staying. We glazed them a second time from the inside instead: six units in slim white aluminium, sitting behind windows that were not touched.
Installed
On a listed building the windows are part of what is listed, so replacing them was never the job. Secondary glazing is the other answer: a second window fitted on the inside of the one already there. Nothing came out, nothing was altered, and from the street the house looks exactly as it did. Six openings were done.
Five of them are horizontal sliders. The panes run sideways past each other on a track, so nothing swings out into the room and nothing needs clear space in front of it, which matters where a window sits behind a deep sill, a radiator or furniture. The sixth is a lift-out unit, a single pane held in its frame that comes out in your hands, for an opening that only needs reaching occasionally.
The frames are slim white aluminium and sit inside the reveal, which is what stops a second window reading as a second window. White was the choice here. Brown is the other standard colour, and any RAL can be matched if a frame needs to disappear into a darker reveal or pick up something already in the room.
