Keep Your Door Looking Brand New
Door Maintenance Guide
With service areas including Milton Keynes, Northampton, Ampthill, Toddington, Leighton Buzzard, Buckinghamshire, and the neighbouring Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire regions, Fenster Glazing is proud to offer high-quality door installations throughout the Midlands.
Composite, uPVC & Aluminium Doors are exposed to environmental factors like wind, rain, and pollution, which can cause dirt to build up. Fenster doors can withstand dirt, but it is still advisable to clean them frequently to keep them looking good.
Standard Glass Maintenance
The door maintenance for standard glass also has simple steps to keep it clean. For routine cleaning, employ a soft cloth and a mild soap or washing-up liquid solution to wipe away the surfaces.
Tougher stains can make door maintenance hard, but luckily, we only recommend two simple steps to look after your door. Use a commercial window cleaning solution or cream and follow the provided instructions to clean off stubborn stains. Be careful that the solution does not come into contact with the door frame to avoid damaging it. Rinse the glass thoroughly with clean water to eliminate any residue. Please refrain from using creams containing abrasive pastes, steel wool, or razor blades for the removal of stubborn marks.
If you have leaded glass in your door, maintaning it is a bit different than traditional glass. Over time, the lead used in leaded glass undergoes natural weathering, resulting in a uniformly oxidised appearance.
The duration of this process may vary depending on the level of exposure to the elements and the specific location (urban or rural). We recommend exercising patience and allowing this natural course to unfold.
Cleaning Door Accessories
In your door maintenance routine, it’s important to remember to look after your accessories too. When cleaning your door accessories, use these simple steps to look after them. For regular cleaning, use a soft cloth and a mild soap or washing-up liquid solution to get rid of easy marks. When addressing stainless steel or letterboxes, remove surface dirt by gently dusting with a soft cloth.
While doing door maintenance, look after the stubborn stains by using white spirit or a high-quality, non-abrasive car wax polish. Avoid using alternative cleaning agents, metal cleaners, caustic or ammonia-based products, scouring powder, steel wool, or scouring pads.
Lock and Hinge Maintenance
It’s important to maintain the locks on your door. After cleaning, it is important to lubricate the locks so they can last longer. Lubricate locks exclusively with light machine oil and refrain from using alternative oils, grease, or WD40 while doing door maintenance.
Ensure you have a spare key readily available, preferably entrusted to a dependable neighbour. Please note that removing a lock from a door without a key is not feasible. For all access and security emergencies, please contact our office at 01908 429200.
For hinges, apply light machine oil as necessary to lubricate catches, restrictors, and window hinges. We advise against using any other type of oil or grease. Also, don’t lubricate plastic moving parts during your door maintenance, as they possess self-lubricating properties.
