Door pane replacement, Sharnbrook

The top pane of the back door had gone. Toughened glass is meant to break like this, into small blunt pieces that stay in the frame, but it leaves a door you cannot see through and cannot leave overnight.

Repaired

Before: the toughened pane crazed right across and held in by the beads.
Job One door pane
Fault Toughened unit shattered
Fitted New sealed unit, same door
Door Kept, with its locks

Toughened glass does not crack across, it crazes all at once, and the pieces are held where they are by the beads and the seal. That is the safety behaviour working, and it is why the door in the before photograph is still standing there in one piece with a pane nobody can see through.

The door itself was sound, so the job was the glass and nothing else. The beads came out, the broken unit was cleared, the rebate was cleaned and a new sealed unit went into the same door leaf. The locks, the hinges and the frame were not touched, and the door closed and locked afterwards as it had before.

Broken glass is the clearest case there is for describing a fault on a form rather than waiting for a visit: it is obvious, it is measurable, and the office can price and book it before anyone travels.
