uPVC Tilt & Turn Windows
A tilt and turn is the only window we fit that opens into the room. Tip the top in for air without unlocking anything, or swing the whole sash inwards to reach the outside of the glass from where you are standing. It is why they end up in flats, in upper-floor bedrooms and anywhere a sash swinging outwards would be in the way.

How it opens
It opens into the room.
Every other window we fit either swings out or slides. This one comes in. Tip the top inwards a few inches for air, or swing the whole sash into the room like a door, and both come off the same handle.
Two things follow from that, and between them they are the reason anybody buys one. You can reach the outside face of the glass from where you are standing, however far up the building you are. And nothing ever swings out over whatever happens to be on the other side of the wall.
- Liniar 70mm EnergyPlus, sculptured, four chambers through the frame
- 28mm double glazed as standard, or a 36mm triple
- Sixteen colours outside, matched or smooth white inside
The handle
One lever does both, and the key can hold it at tilt.
A quarter turn of the handle and the top of the sash tips inwards for background air. Keep turning and the same handle swings the whole sash into the room. There is no second catch and nothing to prop.
The handle also locks with a key, and the middle key position is the one worth knowing about. Leave it there and the handle still reaches tilt but will not go round to the full opening. The room airs all night and the sash cannot be swung in, which is what you want in a child's bedroom or anything above a drop. It is the locking handle on every tilt and turn we fit, so the setting is there whether or not you ask for it.
Security
It locks by pulling itself into the frame.
Turning the handle to shut drives the gearing right around the sash, and it locks into steel keeps set at intervals the whole way round the window rather than at the handle alone. Because the sash closes inwards, locking pulls it tighter against its seals instead of holding it up against them. That is the same movement that makes it weathertight, and it is why there is nothing on the outside to get a bar behind.
Liniar test the 70mm system to PAS 24 and to Part Q, and it is a Secured by Design product to BS EN 12608-1. Those are their figures for the profile rather than a certificate for one particular window, so ask us what a specific opening is being built to and we will tell you.
Where it goes
Four jobs it does better than anything else we fit.
A tilt and turn is not the window for every opening in the house, and we would rather say so here than at survey. These are the four situations where it is the right answer and the others are not close.
- Flats and upper floors
- With the sash turned in you can wash the outside of the glass standing in the room. Three floors up that is the difference between cleaning your own windows and paying somebody with a pole, and it is the reason most of these go where they go.
- Anything above a drop
- Lock the handle on the middle key position and the window still tilts for air but will not swing open. A bedroom airs overnight with the sash held in the frame.
- Where nothing can swing outwards
- A balcony, a walkway, a shared path, a boundary a few feet from the wall. An outward-opening casement is simply not allowed to be there, and this is the window that solves it.
- Wide openings in one sash
- The weight is carried at the bottom corner rather than hung off hinges down one edge, so a tilt and turn takes a bigger single sash than a side-hung casement of the same system. We size it against the opening at survey.
It reads modern, which is right at home on a flat or a newer house. On a period elevation the casement and the flush sash hold the proportions the building was built with, and a sliding sash is the one that belongs in a Victorian front. All three are ours, and getting you the right one matters more to us than getting you this one.
Specification choices
Finish the design with your colours, glass and hardware.
Choose your colours, privacy glass and hardware; each guide helps narrow the detail before survey.
Colour
Sixteen colours outside, matched or white inside.
A uPVC colour is a foil bonded to the profile at the factory rather than paint applied afterwards, which is why the woodgrains have a grain you can feel and why none of them need repainting.

Handles
Five finishes on the locking tilt and turn handle.
Tilt and turn windows take their own handle, because one lever has to do two jobs. Turn it one way and the top tilts inwards for air. Turn it further and the whole sash swings in.

Product questions
FAQs about uPVC Tilt & Turn Windows
How does a tilt and turn window open?
One handle does both. Turn it a quarter and the top of the sash tips inwards a few inches for ventilation. Keep turning and the whole sash swings into the room on its side hinges, like a door.
Can you stop it opening fully?
Yes, and it is the setting most people want upstairs. The handle locks with a key, and the middle key position lets the handle reach tilt but not the full opening, so the room airs without the sash being able to swing in.
Are they good for upper floors and flats?
It is the main reason people choose them. The sash turns into the room so you can clean the outside of the glass from inside, and nothing swings out over a balcony or a walkway.
What glazing do they take?
A 28mm double glazed unit as standard, or a 36mm triple. Liniar publish 1.3 W/m²K for the double glazed window and 0.93 for the triple, and rate the system A++.
Do they suit an older house?
They can, but they read as modern, and on a period elevation a casement, a flush sash or a sliding sash usually looks more at home. Tell us the property and we will say so honestly.
Order process
A clear process from first quote to aftercare.
Four steps. The first one has two ways in: price it yourself online, or have us come out. After that it runs the same either way.
Your price
Price it yourself on the online tool, or book a free consultation and we build the same quote with you. Both run on the same price list, so the figure matches.
Technical survey
Once you go ahead we survey before anything is made. Not a second sales visit: the measurements, thresholds and fixings the factory needs to build it right.
Installation
Fitted by our own installers rather than subcontractors, trained on the systems we sell and working carefully in a house someone lives in. We clear up after ourselves before we leave.
Aftercare
A ten year insurance-backed guarantee through the CPA on new windows and doors, and your FENSA certificate sent direct. Anything afterwards, you ring us, not a call centre.
What Milton Keynes homeowners say
Real reviews from real installations. Every one is public, so you can go and check them yourself.
Fenster have just completed a front door installation on my new property - fantastic job and strongly recommend! The online design tool is great, Perry back at HQ is brilliant as is his communication. Andy, who installed the door, is a top gent and professional. Will definitely be a returning customer.
Read on GoogleReally happy with the service we received from Fensters Windows. Aaron and Shane turned up on time and were both really friendly. They explained any issues as they went along and talked us through the different options, which we really appreciated. They did a great job fitting our new back doors and cleaned up everything afterwards. We also paid exactly what we had originally been quoted, with no unexpected extra costs. Really pleased with our new doors and would definitely recommend Fensters Windows. Thank you Aaron and Shane!
Read on GoogleWe have used Fensters for years on a variety of glazing work, and 2 door installations. They are competitively priced and responsive. They take great care over measuring and specifying the work, giving you a clear quote so you understand what you are getting (thanks Perry!). The fitters are all extremely competent and personable. We had to replace our front door for accessibility reasons, they gave us confidence that our requirements would be met, reproduced the intricate leaded and stained-glass pattern of our old door, and did a quality fitting job (thanks to Johnnie and Shane!). In summary they are our go-to suppliers for all replacement and repair work.
Read on GoogleI had an excellent experience with Fenster Glazing from start to finish. Nick Perry and David managed the initial quote to installation process seamlessly, keeping communication clear, honest, and completely stress-free. When it came to the actual fitting, Zac and Shane did a fantastic job with the installation, working efficiently and leaving everything spotless. The professionalism from the entire team was top-notch, and the final result looks brilliant. I highly recommend them.
Read on GoogleGreat service from Fenster Glazing, very happy with our new bi-fold door, glass door and windows (with built-in blinds) There was an issue with the wrong spec of glass provided to them from their supplier, so they had to temporarily board up a door and a window, but this was put right within a few weeks. Recommended, thanks.
