Window and Door Repairs

Something has stopped working: a handle has snapped, a door will not lock, a window will not shut. Tell us what it is doing and we will tell you what it usually is, roughly what it costs, and whether it is worth repairing at all. We repair windows and doors we did not fit as readily as ones we did.

Why have us repair it

  • 01

    Quick and efficient

Most faults are diagnosed and priced without a visit, so the first thing that happens is an answer rather than an appointment.

  • 02

    Dedicated service engineers

Two of them, with decades each behind them, and a van carrying the parts that fail most often.

  • 03

    Transparent

You get the figure and the reason for it before anything is agreed, and nothing changes on the day without a conversation.

  • 04

    Fairly priced

Priced off a set list rather than judged on the doorstep, so the same fault costs the same whoever we send.

Diagnostics

Most of it is fixable.

Windows and doors are built from parts that are meant to be replaced, so a fault is usually a repair rather than a new window. Pick whichever sounds closest to yours and we will show you what is normally behind it.

Windows

It will not open, or it is stiff
Multi-point mechanism. Identified from the backset, centres and faceplate, then replaced with the correct gear.
The handle is broken or loose
Handle. Matched to the spindle length and fixing centres already in the sash, in a finish that suits the rest of the house.
It catches, or will not sit flush
Realignment. We square the sash and reset the keeps and hinge packers so it closes under its own weight rather than being pulled to.
There is a draught round it
Hinges, or the seal. We check both. Stays reset or replaced, and the gasket re-run in one length round the sash if it has gone.
The glass is misted or broken
Sealed unit. Measured and replaced on its own. The frame stays where it is.

Doors

It will not lock
Gearbox, or alignment. We check the alignment first, because a new gearbox in a dropped door fails again. Then the gear, if it needs it.
The key will not turn, or has snapped
Cylinder. Replaced to the door thickness, and keyed alike if you want one key for the front and the back.
The handle is floppy or snapped
Door handle. Matched to the existing backplate centres and spindle, so the door is not left with holes in it.
It has dropped, or catches on the frame
Realignment. We re-hang the door square and reset the keeps, so it closes and locks without being lifted. Hinges only rarely need changing.
There is a draught round it
Realignment. We adjust the hinges and keeps so the door compresses its seal along the whole edge instead of at one end.
The glass is misted or broken
Sealed unit. The glazed panel is measured and changed on its own. The door stays on its hinges.
My cat cannot get out
Cat or dog flap. A sealed unit cannot be cut once it is made, so which of the two your door needs is settled before anything is ordered.

Who comes out

Two engineers, and the parts already on the van.

They carry the fittings that fail most often: handles, hinges, cylinders, gaskets and the common gearboxes. So it is often fixed on the first visit rather than looked at, ordered and booked in again.

They have decades each behind them, which is the other reason the diagnosis tends to hold. They have seen the system before, so most faults are recognised from a description and a photograph rather than found on the day.

Parts

Most parts, for most systems.

Hardware is more standardised than it looks. A mechanism is matched on its backset, centres and faceplate rather than on the badge on the window, which is why we can repair systems we did not fit and systems nobody sells any more.

Repair or replace

A repair is usually right. Sometimes it is not.

On a sound frame the hardware and the glass are the parts designed to be replaced, and they cost a fraction of the window. What we will not do is take the money for a repair we can see will not hold.

Repair

  • The frame is straight and the welds are sound
  • The fault is hardware or glass
  • One or two windows, not the whole house

Replace

  • Sashes distorted or welds opened
  • The same fault has come back before
  • Most of the windows are failing at once
Sealed double glazed unit cut through to show the cavity between the panes Misted or broken glass If it is the glass, the frame stays. A failed sealed unit is measured and changed on its own. Replacement glazed units

How it works

Most of it happens before anyone visits.

  1. 01

Tell us what it is doing

In your own words, with a photograph if you can.

  2. 02

    We price it, usually remotely

Most faults the office can diagnose and quote by phone or email.

  3. 03

If it needs looking at, we come

Free of charge, and you get the figure before you decide.

  4. 04

We fix it, or say why not

If a part is genuinely obsolete you will hear that rather than a guess.

Product questions

FAQs about Window and Door Repairs

How much does a window or door repair cost?

Repairs start from £96 including VAT. The price depends on which part your window or door needs, and you will know the exact figure before any work begins. Nothing changes on the day without a conversation. Tell us what it is doing, send a photograph if you can, and we will come back to you.

Do you charge to come out and quote a repair?

No. Quoting is free. Most faults we can diagnose and price without coming out at all, from a description and a photograph or two, and where it does need looking at, that visit is free as well.

Do you repair windows and doors you did not fit?

Yes, and most of our repair work is exactly that. We fit uPVC, aluminium and composite systems every week, so we know the hardware other installers use. The only real limit is parts: on a very old system the gear may no longer be made.

My double glazing has gone misty. Is that a repair?

It is a glass job rather than a hardware one. The seal around the double glazed unit has failed and moisture is in the cavity, which cannot be dried out, but the glass changes on its own and the frame stays. See our replacement glazed units page for how that works.

Can you still get parts for an older window or door?

Usually. Hardware is more standardised than it looks, and a mechanism is matched on backset, centres and faceplate rather than on the brand of the window. Where a part genuinely is obsolete we will tell you, and we will say what the alternatives are rather than leaving you with a window that does not lock.

Should I repair it or replace the whole window?

Repair, if the frame is sound and the fault is hardware or glass, because those are the parts designed to be replaced. Replace, if the frame itself has gone: distorted sashes, failed welds, or a window where you would be repairing the same thing again next year. We will tell you which one you have.

Do you cover Milton Keynes and the surrounding area?

Yes. We are based on Alston Drive in Bradwell Abbey and cover Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire and Hertfordshire.
